One of the most annoying things about swimming is goggles that fog up. Visibility: zero! A solution is goggles with an anti-fog coating or special sprays. A free alternative is another trick—though it might be a bit gross. But you’ll get used to it!

As a six-time German champion in butterfly swimming, Toni Embacher knows all about it: During every swim session, the goggles fog up as soon as you dive underwater. For professionals, this can cost them a spot on the podium! He saves money on special sprays or drops that solve the problem—a simple trick works just as well. He shows how the pros do it in the video.

Why Do Goggles Fog Up?

Goggles fog up for two reasons: First, new models have a thin silicone film from production that fogs up when the goggles are submerged for the first time. Second, the temperature difference between air and water causes the goggles to fog. When you dive, the air on the lenses cools rapidly, resulting in small water droplets. This effect is especially pronounced in heated pools or during high temperatures in summer.

Solutions to the Problem

The thin silicone film can be removed with a little toothpaste mixed with water, rubbed on the inside of the lenses.

To prevent condensation, you can use a drop of dish soap, conditioner, or mild baby shampoo (as an alternative to special antifog sprays1 or drops): Let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse off the lenses. For those who want to be more cautious (fearing abrasive particles might damage the plastic), dish soap, conditioner, or (mild) baby shampoo is recommended.

One way to extend the life of these so-called antifog coatings is with special sprays or drops. But spend extra money on that? Former professional swimmer Toni Embacher shows in the video above a simple trick that prevents goggles from fogging up. “With this, you can complete the entire training session with clear vision!” says Embacher.
