They promise gentle care for the skin. And most lotions for basic care for babies and children deliver on that promise, as a comparison by “Ökotest” shows. Which products are the best?

Regular application is essential for eczema—and it also helps with rough skin. Drugstores and pharmacies offer a wide range of lotions for this basic care, as dermatologists call it. The magazine “Ökotest” tested 21 of these eczema basic care products, specifically for children with the skin condition or a predisposition to it (issue 03/22).

Basic Care for Children with Eczema–”Ökotest” Top Marks Also for Drugstore Products

The good news: Problematic preservatives that might trigger allergies or have hormonal effects are not found in any of the tested lotions. Also encouraging: 14 of the 21 products received an overall rating of “good” or “very good.”

The top rating was awarded to:

  • “Baby Derma Care Lotion White Mallow” by Weleda
  • “Baby-Bébé Natural Soothing Body Cream” by Attitude
  • “Med Care Lotion, Care for Eczema” by Rossmann’s own brand Babydream
  • “Ultra Sensitive Body Lotion” by DM’s own brand Babylove
  • “Care Lotion for Babies and Children Fragrance-Free” by Paediprotect

According to “Ökotest”, the focus of eczema basic care with such lotions is primarily on providing the skin with moisture and fat. Applying these lotions can often prevent itching.

Does Insurance Cover Basic Care Products?

According to the report, cosmetics for basic care are not reimbursable—this applies to the products in the test. Exceptions are medically prescribed basic care ointments or lotions that are already a finished medicinal product or are mixed as a medicinal formulation in the pharmacy—these products are covered by statutory health insurance, at least for children up to twelve years old. Especially in cases of more severe skin inflammation, it is advisable to seek medical advice and have creams with anti-inflammatory agents prescribed.
