Of course, electric toothbrushes for kids should clean well. And if they fall to the floor, they shouldn’t be ready for the trash. However, that’s the case with some brushes.

It happens quickly: A clumsy move and the child’s electric toothbrush crashes onto the bathroom tiles. Not every model designed for kids remains intact. This is shown by a test of electric toothbrushes for children by the magazine “Ökotest” (Issue 5/2023).

Technical defects, cracks in the casing

Testers examined eleven electric toothbrushes for kids. This included a drop test where the devices were dropped onto a tiled floor from different angles.

Five models didn’t fare well: Some toothbrushes couldn’t be turned on after just a few falls, while others showed cracks in the casing. According to “Ökotest,” moisture can enter through these cracks and disable the technology. Moreover, some user manuals state that damaged devices should no longer be used.

That electric toothbrushes can be much more robust–the “Ökotesters” are convinced. In a test of electric toothbrushes for adults, 14 out of 15 models passed the drop test.

However, there were also four models that impressed the testers–not only because they withstood the drop test well.

Two devices received the top rating of “very good”:

  • “Sonic Toothbrush Eco Vibe 3 Junior Minions” by Happy Brush (€49.95)
  • “Sonicare For Kids Sonic Toothbrush HX6322/04” by Philips (€49.99)

Two other models were rated “good”:

  • “Kids Electric Toothbrush Disney Frozen II” by Oral-B (€19.95)
  • “Prokudent Kids Rechargeable Toothbrush The Little Dragon Coconut” (€11.99) by Rossmann.

All of them impressed the Ökotesters with a high proportion of well-rounded bristles that are gentle on children’s gums and teeth. The two “very good” models also feature lithium-ion batteries that function over a long period without significant charging losses.
