Orlando Bloom joins the ranks of Hollywood stars who have undergone extreme physical transformations for a film. The Hollywood star lost 53 pounds for “The Cut.” It was a physical journey he embarked on deliberately, with a clear message in mind, but it also had a significant impact on him. Orlando Bloom recently revealed the physical and mental effects the weight loss had on him. In the end, he could hardly do anything—he “just lay around,” as he described in an interview. He strongly advises against imitation!
In “The Cut,” Orlando Bloom delves into the sometimes brutal reality of the boxing world. Unlike many popular sports films, this one isn’t about specific trophies or titles the protagonist wants to win. The film highlights an aspect of the sport that is often accepted but can take on unhealthy proportions: the pressure to reach a certain weight. To portray this convincingly, Orlando Bloom had to trim his body and essentially starve himself beforehand. The 48-year-old lost about 53 pounds and is barely recognizable in the film!
“The Cut” Highlights a Unique Aspect of Boxing
“The fight in the film is ‘The Cut,’ meaning losing weight (in English ‘cutting weight’; Ed.),” Orlando Bloom explained on the British talk show “The Morning.” “Boxers have to lose weight to step into the ring. That’s the focus of the film. It’s a kind of commentary on what happens in the mind and the stress the body goes through. And I can say: It was very real. As intense as it looks in the film, it was during filming. I practically lived the role of the boxer.”

Orlando Bloom’s Extreme Transformation
Like the boxer he portrays in the film, Orlando Bloom’s clear goal was to lose weight—a lot of it. “We went to extremes for the film. That’s why no one should imitate it,” the actor emphasized. He worked with a nutritionist who guided him step by step and constantly monitored his blood values. Only in this way was it apparently possible for the Hollywood star to push himself to and sometimes beyond his limits.
In the End, There Was Only Tuna and Cucumbers
Orlando Bloom went from three meals down to one. “Suddenly, all these foods were taken away from me, including my beloved protein powder. In the last three weeks (of film preparation; Ed.), there was essentially only tuna and cucumbers.” While this had the desired effect of weight loss, it also had unpleasant consequences. “I had no energy or brain power left, was mentally just exhausted. I was ‘hangry,’ and it was really unpleasant for anyone to be around me,” the 48-year-old reported.

Mentally Close to Breakdown
Moreover, the experience was a torment for Orlando Bloom himself—especially mentally. “It was so strange, the paranoia and intrusive thoughts you have. (…) I just lay around on set, quickly doing a few push-ups before my scene to look more muscular,” the actor described his physical and mental state during the “The Cut” filming. Which was no surprise, given what he had put his body through during that time: “I mean, we have to eat, sleep, and take care of ourselves.”
Highlighting the Dangers of Boxing
Why did Orlando Bloom endure this ordeal? There were two reasons. “I’ve always wanted to push my limits, and here I had the opportunity. In the end, you really go through and feel what you want to portray with the role in the film.”
Additionally, “The Cut” carries an important message—to highlight how dangerous the extreme weight reduction many boxers undergo can be. “Many athletes go through this regularly,” Orlando Bloom said. “And for some, it costs them their lives.”
