In the action thriller “One Battle After Another,” Sean Penn once again showcased a remarkably toned physique. And that at the rather tender age of 65. How does the Hollywood star manage to stay so fit and physically in top form? FITBOOK author Tony Poland reveals the secret.

Sean Penn’s muscular build is certainly no accident. That’s a fact. Rather, it’s the result of decades of disciplined and functional strength training.1

His fitness journey began 40 years ago for the film “At Close Range.” Initially, he didn’t want to reveal much about his workouts. “I’ve said before that I don’t particularly like talking about training programs. It’s not really that interesting,” the multiple Oscar winner said back in 2015. Yet, over the years, some details about his training have emerged…

Workouts with the Best in the Business

For “At Close Range,” Sean Penn hired none other than Vince Gironda. The former fitness trainer, who passed away in 1997, had already brought bodybuilding legends like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Frank Zane into top form.

Gironda, in particular, demanded absolute discipline, precision, and intensity. He developed his signature “8 x 8” training method, which delivered visible results. Sean Penn also trained according to this program.

The “8 x 8” Training Method Explained

This approach demands ruthless honesty with oneself and is therefore more suited to advanced and experienced individuals. There are no tricks, no unnecessary movements, and no room for sloppy repetitions. There are only weights and a stopwatch. This creates tension, volume, and consistency, which in turn stimulates muscle growth.

How to Train with the “8 x 8” Program

The basic principle is already in the name: You complete eight sets of eight repetitions each, with a maximum of 30 seconds of rest in between. Overall, the workout should not exceed one hour.

The exercises should focus on about one to four key exercises per muscle group. For the upper body, this means, for example: bench press, chin-ups, dumbbell shoulder press, or barbell curls.

You use a weight with which you might also manage twelve repetitions. But: Since you complete eight sets, you will tire more quickly. The breaks remain short to maintain intensity and metabolic load. Thus, each session becomes a test of strength and endurance.

Additionally, the weights are not too heavy. This allows you to better focus on the muscles and strengthen the mind-muscle connection. This interplay was particularly important to Vince Gironda in terms of physical development. Of course, factors like adequate sleep, healthy nutrition, and proper stress management are also crucial. For Sean Penn, the “8 x 8” method certainly paid off.2

Thrusters, Power Cleans, Surfing, and Running

Additionally, as he aged, the American incorporated more complex and functional movements into his training routine. Especially for physically demanding roles like a Special Forces soldier in “The Gunman,” Sean Penn relied on thrusters (front squats with overhead press) and power cleans for five sets of five repetitions each.

Afterward, he added isolation exercises with lighter weights and higher repetition counts. Surfing and running sessions are also a must for Sean Penn. Another helpful habit: During filming, he is known to smoke less.

Fit Through Martial Arts

Sean Penn has long been passionate about combat training, particularly Krav Maga, the self-defense system of the Israeli intelligence service. “I’ve been practicing Krav Maga for several years now. It’s not really a sport, but rather a close combat technique taught to the Israeli military,” he said. “It’s designed to neutralize and disarm the opponent,” he revealed in 2015.

In addition to Krav Maga, the actor also swears by boxing. He even had a famous training partner and spent four weeks in the ring with U.S. singer Bob Dylan. “Sorry, Bob, if I’m spilling the beans here, but he came by every morning. This went on for about a month, I think. Around seven or eight in the morning, with his hoodie and about six bullmastiffs coming out of a VW bus. Not much was said; it was more like, ‘Good? Good.’ And then we boxed,” Sean Penn told U.S. talk show host Jimmy Fallon. What a fantastic sparring duo!
