Since the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Spider-Man fever has broken out again. While Tom Holland effortlessly scales walls, swings through New York, and performs spectacular stunts on screen, more and more people on social media are trying an exercise that promises at least a small piece of superhero feeling: the Spider-Man Challenge. But what looks playful quickly turns out to be a real test of core strength.
What the Spider-Man Challenge Is About
On Instagram and TikTok, the challenge often looks easy. However, anyone who tries it quickly realizes it’s not as simple as it seems. Essentially, the Spider-Man Challenge combines elements of a handstand, support, and balance exercise. What looks pretty cool in a short social media clip demands a lot from the body.
First, you stand with your back to a wall and place your hands shoulder-width apart on the floor. Then, you walk your feet up the wall step by step until your body is almost horizontal in the air. Arms, shoulders, and the core must stabilize the entire body weight.1
Now comes the really difficult part: One leg is slowly lifted off the wall and controlled downward—without touching the floor. At the same time, you lift one hand off the floor and try to touch the wall with it. The rest of the body should remain as calm and stable as possible.

The Key Lies in the Core
The reason the Spider-Man Challenge is so difficult is simple: The challenge requires controlling various muscle groups simultaneously. A key role is played by the so-called core. This includes not only the abdominal muscles but also muscles in the back, hips, and pelvis, as well as deeper muscle groups.
During the challenge, you quickly realize why all these muscle groups are important. As soon as one leg leaves the wall and one hand leaves the floor, two support points are suddenly missing. Nevertheless, the body must not tip to the side or collapse. The core must counteract, while arms and shoulders bear a large part of the weight. At the same time, balance, flexibility, and coordination are required. So just being strong is not enough.2
What the Spider-Man Challenge Reveals About Fitness
If you suddenly start to wobble on the wall, it doesn’t necessarily mean you lack strength. The challenge primarily requires controlling various muscle groups simultaneously. This is exactly what functional core training is about: The core muscles must work together rather than just developing strength individually.
This ability is not only needed when trying to play Spider-Man. The core muscles are involved in numerous everyday and sports movements and help stabilize the spine. When bending, carrying, running, or jumping, a stable core helps control movements and transfer forces between the upper and lower body.3
In addition to the core muscles, the diaphragm is also challenged in the Spider-Man Challenge: It is part of the system that contributes to stabilizing the core. Breathing also plays a role—especially when trying to maintain body tension while arms and legs are simultaneously engaged.
Meta-Analysis on the Effect of Core Stability Training
Scientific studies also show that a strong core plays an important role in such movements. A meta-analysis published in the journal “Sports Medicine” in 2016 summarized several studies on the effects of core strength training on the physical performance of young athletes.
The results showed that the training had a particularly significant impact on core muscle strength. Additionally, researchers found positive effects on balance. However, the effects on other skills studied varied in strength. So core training is not a miracle cure that automatically makes you more capable in every area—but for core strength and balance, the results indicate a positive effect.4

Moderator Rebecca Mir Takes on the Spider-Man Challenge
The Spider-Man Challenge has long since arrived on social networks. Moderator Rebecca Mir tried the trend a few weeks ago and showed her attempt in the gym on Instagram.
She is not alone. Social media is full of videos of people testing whether they can hold the unusual position. Especially because the movement often looks so effortless in others, disappointment may quickly follow in one’s own attempt.
Don’t Start with the Most Difficult Version – Tips for Preparation
If you’re now looking for the next free wall, don’t start with the most difficult version. After all, the challenge requires you to support part of your body weight on your arms while maintaining balance.
Good preparation includes simpler exercises like planks, side planks, bird dogs, or dead bugs. They train the core without having to go directly upside down against a wall. Push-ups can also help you get used to supporting your body weight with your arms and shoulders.
The core stability important for the Spider-Man Challenge can already be trained with simple exercises without equipment. It’s sensible to start with a few exercises and short sessions, gradually increasing the difficulty. Anyone experiencing pain or health restrictions should consult a doctor or physical therapist before attempting a demanding exercise like the Spider-Man Challenge.
