Constantly aching feet can significantly impact life. Often, a misalignment is the cause. It can be easily corrected–and should be. Without treatment, surgery might even be necessary.
Weak Tendons and Ligaments
In a flatfoot condition, the longitudinal arch of the foot is lowered due to weak tendons and ligaments. To alleviate or prevent pain, the magazine “Apotheken Umschau” (issue B02/2020) recommends walking barefoot, muscle training, and especially orthopedic insoles. They support the foot arch and realign it.
Tip: Always Buy Shoes in the Afternoon
It’s important that shoes and insoles fit well together. While sneakers and trekking shoes offer enough space inside, other shoes often need to be purchased a size larger. The magazine advises buying shoes in the afternoon, as feet are generally a bit thicker then.

Do Insurance Plans Cover Orthopedic Insoles?
Public health insurance typically covers two pairs of insoles per year, though patients must make a small copayment. Wearing these aids can take some getting used to, but it’s not a lifelong requirement. After consulting with a doctor, you may stop using the insoles once the symptoms have subsided.

Where Does the Pain Come From?
Flatfoot causes pain and swelling on the inside of the ankle. The misaligned heel also strains the ankle joint, ligaments, and tendons. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary.
