TV host Aleksandra Bechtel didn’t want to keep “eating her way through the lockdown”–with the familiar consequences when buttoning her favorite pants. The 48-year-old is one of many who applied to FITBOOK with their transformation story–and this is her story.

During the lockdown, we spend a lot of time at home, and TV host Aleksandra Bechtel (“Big Brother”) is no exception. Like many, the 48-year-old struggled with the consequences of her own complacency. At the beginning of the year, she decided to start a small transformation process, believing it would surely do her good. What helped the mother of two in her consistent implementation, she shared with FITBOOK in a video interview (full-length at the end of the article).

“You tend to let yourself go”

“Christmas was a pivotal point for me. We were at home with the four of us, had no visitors. You stand in the kitchen, you snack. Before that, it was home office and homeschooling–you tend to let yourself go,” says Aleksandra Bechtel in conversation with FITBOOK. “The pants pinch, the blouse doesn’t close in the front, and when you look in the mirror, you think: ‘Oh my goodness!’ I no longer felt comfortable in my body. That’s bad!” The 48-year-old decided not to ignore this feeling. Instead, she began to think about what would be good for her–and what she could do for her health in the long term.

Her body changed by giving up sugar and alcohol

To avoid “continuing,” as she says, “to eat her way through the lockdown,” Bechtel completely changed her diet. Since January 1, she has completely given up sugar (“even the hidden ones!”) and alcohol. She also only eats what she has cooked herself. What likely helped with the sugar abstinence: her general preference for savory foods. Examples of her breakfast, lunch, and dinner can be found in the video interview above. “It really makes a difference. (…) the pounds have dropped, almost seven kilos are gone,” Bechtel tells FITBOOK. It wasn’t even difficult. “You just have to really want it.” What does take effort, however, is the cooking–but she prefers to use her time for that rather than Netflix.

Every morning the host jogs four kilometers

Additionally, the 48-year-old, who used to be in competitive gymnastics, takes a daily four-kilometer run with a neighbor. “We run every morning at 8 a.m., it takes 25 minutes. It’s work every day to drag yourself out there. But you come home and feel fresh and fit in your head,” Bechtel describes the effect of morning exercise on her well-being. “It makes me happy, I never would have thought!” To motivate herself, she encourages herself with beautiful images at every step: “I think of the beautiful dress hanging in the closet that I would like to wear again. Of the dress I saw in the shop window and hopefully will buy soon…”

With the fixed routine, she has broken her usual habit of chronically postponing things. “I admire the people whose transformations you report on at FITBOOK. And now I’ve managed to change something too. I’m proud of that!”

The TV host’s daily exercise program also includes exercises in a prone position to combat nagging back pain, as well as strength exercises using her own body weight. Aleksandra Bechtel used to perform these under the supervision of a personal trainer before the lockdown. Now it has to be done alone, and Bechtel invests 40 minutes daily. “Stay healthy as long as possible”

Her long-term goal? “At some point, you start thinking about how many years you have left–and how you want to spend them?” She has decided to do everything to stay healthy as long as possible. “Once you’ve found the point to do something for yourself: fantastic!”

In the detailed FITBOOK interview, host Aleksandra Bechtel also talks about how she copes with the burden of homeschooling and what she pays attention to in her children’s diet.
