Masks for the mouth and nose are meant to protect others and oneself. Ideally, the mask fits comfortably. And if not? You can make adjustments.
The everyday cotton mask for COVID-19 has become a daily companion for many. It’s particularly uncomfortable when the elastic band presses against the ear. But there are solutions for that.
The nonprofit portal #MaskeZeigen suggests using a slightly wider band or opting for a softer jersey yarn tie instead of elastic.
Quick Relief with a Band-Aid
As a quick fix, you can stick thin band-aids on the spots where the elastic rubs against the ear. Alternatively, place a thin compress between the skin and the band–though this is not recommended as a long-term solution, according to the platform that compiles various tips for wearing everyday masks.

What to Consider When Choosing Face Masks for Children
To prevent the COVID-19 everyday mask from pressing, it must fit as snugly as possible
No matter which solution you choose, the mask must cover the nose and mouth up to the chin and fit snugly at the edges.
Is it a problem if the mask is a bit loose behind the ear? Not really, according to infectious disease specialist Janne Vehreschild. “With everyday masks, it’s less about the filter and more about the range. A breath without a mask can propel particles quite far forward.” The function of masks without filters is mainly to reduce distance and concentration. And for that, it doesn’t matter if a little escapes behind the ear.

Headbands as an Alternative
Nothing helps and the COVID-19 everyday mask still presses? Then it might be an option to replace ear loops with headbands or so-called tie bands that are fastened at the back of the head.
The blog “Nähfrosch” showcases an ear saver: A band made of wider fabric that sits at the back of the head with two buttons on the sides, where the mask’s elastic bands are attached. This way, they no longer press directly on the ear.
