Whether it’s high-protein pizza or quick everyday meals–Stefano Zarrella (35) shows on social media how uncomplicated healthy eating can be. The German-Italian captivates with simple recipes instead of complicated trends. At Lidl’s Silvercrest event, he spoke with FITBOOK about why eggs are often better than exotic “superfoods” and what advice he would give his 20-year-old self regarding fitness.

FITBOOK: You use a variety of kitchen appliances in your cooking videos. But which device do you use most at home and why?
Stefano Zarrella: “Definitely the air fryer! Honestly, sometimes I just want to eat quickly but still have something good on the plate. And less chaos in the kitchen is also a game changer. Equally important to me is my espresso machine. Without good coffee, my day doesn’t start right at all.”

What healthy ingredient do you always have at home that is underrated?
“Eggs, they always work great! They’re versatile, provide high-quality protein, and many underestimate how well they actually fit into every meal.”

“Some Superfoods Are Overrated”

And which “healthy” food do you think is overrated?
“Honestly, anything that’s made too complicated. I think many superfood trends are sometimes a bit overrated. In the end, it’s usually the very simple foods like eggs that really make the difference in the long run. Healthy can also be simple; you don’t have to follow every trend.”

You regularly post new recipes, such as classics in high-protein versions. What nutrients do you think a good everyday dish should cover?
“For me, it includes protein, good carbs, and something fresh. It has to be filling, provide energy, and still be enjoyable to eat.”

If you ever “indulge,” what’s your favorite snack or food?
“Pizza–no discussion. By the way, you can make a protein-rich pizza super easily in less than ten minutes. Just add some skyr to the dough and top it with protein-rich toppings like chicken breast or mozzarella. And honestly, snacking on something sweet occasionally is part of it too. In the end, it’s all about balance.”

You recently posted that you’re enjoying your 30s. What would you say is the biggest difference between Stefano in his 20s and Stefano in his 30s when it comes to nutrition?
“Not much has changed. I’ve stayed pretty true to my balance approach. I eat consciously without making it too complicated, and that works very well for me to this day.”

And has anything changed in terms of fitness?
“Sport has always been a fixed part of my life. But I eventually understood that progress doesn’t just come from training but also from recovery. I pay much more attention to that today and take it seriously. At the same time, I love challenging myself every day and pushing to the limit.”

“Sleep Is Your Most Important Supplement”

What advice would you give your 20-year-old self regarding nutrition and training today?
“Consistency beats any crash plan, always. And sleep is not a luxury; it’s your most important supplement, no matter how motivated you are.”

How often do you train–and what do you do specifically?
“I do strength training four to five times a week and currently enjoy running as well. I incorporate a warm-up and mobility into both. I can’t do without them. My strength training is relatively classic. A mix of basic exercises combined with a few supplementary exercises. It’s important to me to cover the whole body. When running, it’s mainly about balance and endurance. I’m not pursuing a specific goal at the moment; for me, it’s about moving regularly and feeling good while doing it.”

What supplements do you use?
“I regularly use omega-3, magnesium, and protein supplements.”

In conclusion: Mental health is becoming increasingly important. What’s your strategy for staying balanced?
“Going outside, disconnecting, sometimes being unreachable. And I spend a lot of time with my family and my dog Rocky, who forces me to get fresh air every day.”
