Not only women but also men notice physical and possibly mental changes as they age. Some are welcome, like perhaps a greater inner calm. Others can affect daily life and cause distress. Even celebrities aren’t immune to the aging process. Actor Brian Austin Green recently revealed in an interview that at 53, he’s noticed a decrease in his sex drive.
“I Didn’t Ask for It”
“Do you notice a decrease in sex drive as an aging man? Sure, absolutely, of course,” Brian Austin Green answered a listener’s question on the “I Do, Part 2” podcast. The former “Beverly Hills, 90210” star is the father of five sons. Three of them are from his most well-known relationship: He was married to Megan Fox for ten years.
Discussing the changes in his sexuality, the 53-year-old revealed on the podcast: “It’s a chemical thing, it has to do with testosterone, and that’s what men lose as they get older. You can take supplements or not. But for me, it’s definitely the case that my sex drive has decreased. There’s no way to avoid it. I didn’t ask for it.”
Libido in Old Age
As people age, it’s not uncommon to notice changes in libido. Often, age-related hormonal changes are a factor–and not just for women who are in or have gone through menopause. A declining testosterone level is one of the most common physical reasons for a decrease in libido in men, as explained by Dr. Christoph Pies, a urology specialist, in a previous FITBOOK article. “Chronic illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, or thyroid disorders can significantly reduce desire because they affect circulation, nerve functions, and physical performance. Additionally, certain medications, such as some antidepressants or blood pressure medications, can lower libido as a side effect. Sleep deprivation should not be underestimated either, as it disrupts hormonal balance and leads to physical exhaustion, which can significantly reduce sexual desire,” the expert noted.
A decreasing libido doesn’t always have to mean distress for people. In later life stages, the focus can shift from sex to other forms of intimacy. Physical closeness without sex can be perceived as more important and beautiful. Emotional moments can also feel intimate and intense.
However, aging doesn’t necessarily have to be accompanied by a loss of libido. “Sexual desire doesn’t just disappear with age. Libido can change, increase, or decrease. Some people continue to have intercourse, others masturbate, enjoy touch, or express their sexuality in entirely different ways. And some don’t want any sex at all. That’s normal too,” explained gynecologist Dr. Heidi Gößlinghoff in response to a FITBOOK inquiry about a common misconception regarding how sex changes with age for both women and men.
